Dialing 911 from a landline telephone in Darien automatically reaches the Darien Police Dispatcher, trained in Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) protocols. If you dial 911 from a cellular telephone in Darien you will be automatically transferred to a Connecticut State Dispatcher. The Police dispatcher will immediately send a Darien EMS ambulance and the closest Police unit. Assuming a serious medical emergency, the call will be simultaneously sent to CMED where a dispatcher trained in Emergency Medical Dispatch will obtain more information about the situation. The CMED dispatcher will instruct the caller how to provide basic first aid while the ambulance is in transit, and will usually stay on the line until the Emergency Medical Technicians have arrived.

The Darien Police, our town’s First Responder Agency, usually will arrive at the scene within two to four minutes from the time of the 911 call. The Darien Police receive emergency medical training at Post 53 including CPR and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED). Together with the Darien Fire Department they are an integral part of the Darien EMS team, providing life saving interventions when needed in the early minutes of an emergency.

Post 53’s EMS personnel, onboard our state of the art ambulances and our fully equipped mobile “fly cars”, arrive moments after the Darien Police. Post 53 assumes control of patient care, providing extensive Basic Life support as well as Advanced Life Support such as: Intravenous (IV) Therapy, Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments ( PASG), blood sugar testing, and injections of epinephrine when needed.

When Advanced Life Support is needed a paramedic from Stamford EMS will be dispatched to the location. This emergency care triad of the Darien Police, Post 53 EMS and the Stamford Paramedics, often with the assistance of Darien’s three fire departments ensures the town of Darien has rapid and state of the art emergency medical care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
